Great Ocean Road

Our first weekend off from work, the whole gang piles into a rented van and hits the famous Great Ocean Road. It runs along the southeastern coast of Australia between Melbourne and Adelaide in the Victoria province. Four days in a tiny car with our closest international friends. First stop was Bells Beach. You know, this was the beach at the end of Point Break in the scene where Patrick Swayze as “Bodhi” surfs out into the monster waves right before the cops come to arrest him for bank robbing and kidnapping and murder. “Time to dance with the universe” he says fatefully. Cops roll up. Cop number one says “We’ll get him when he comes back in.” Cop number two John “I’m not FBI anymore” Utah (Keanu Reeves) says “He’s not coming back, mwaahahaha.” So we tried to surf it, but my genetic background didn’t allow me to do much standing on the board. Jessica did better though, check out the pictures. Next was the kangaroo infested golf course where we had our first but not last look at these magnificent indigenous land-roaming beasts of Australia. Then we continued on to the “12 Apostles” which as far as I could count was only about 8 rocks sticking up out of the water. But down the road and at the bottom of “Gibson’s steps” was the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. You can tell by the 200 pictures I took. Further down the road was Apollo Bay, one of the small towns on the great road. We climbed a small mountain here on a winding path and at the top were people-learning-to-throw-themselves-off-mountains-while-strapped-to-chairs-and-with-only-tiny-flimsy-parachutes. I tried to sign up immediately but Jessica said we had to go. Finally, we hit the rain forest skywalk around Adelaide. This is an enormous elevated catwalk that is 70 feet (or meters? I don’t remember) above the ground in the trees. Jessica almost threw up when Nacho started to shake the rail. "Wooooo, we are going to fall, are you not scared?" I didn’t even laugh once. In fact, I was very supportive.
